The subject of this research is the issue of equivalence in the translation of idioms and fixed expressions in The Yacoubian Building, a novel by Alaa Al-Aswany—one of the most prominent contemporary Arab novelists—into Turkish by Avi Pardo. The matter of equivalence in translation is a widely discussed topic today, and several significant translation theories have been developed to address its dimensions and related problems. In this regard, Egyptian scholar Mona Baker has been recognized as a key reference figure. This study aims to examine the dimensions of equivalence in the translation of the aforementioned novel through the lens of Mona Baker’s four-level theory of equivalence. Given that the translation was done from an intermediary language—English—this analysis will also help in understanding the challenges of such indirect translations and allow for more informed conclusions about their overall success. This study aims to analyze the translation of idioms and fixed expressions found in the Turkish version of Alaa Al-Aswany’s novel The Yacoubian Building within the framework of Mona Baker’s theory of equivalence in translation studies. In the field of translation studies, the accurate and functional transfer of cultural elements and idiomatic expressions constitutes a major challenge, particularly with regard to preserving the semantic richness and aesthetic value of the source text. Within this context, the study seeks to identify the translation strategies employed in rendering idioms and fixed expressions from Arabic into Turkish and to determine the levels and types of equivalence achieved. The theoretical basis of the research is founded on Mona Baker’s categories of syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and textual equivalence. Employing a qualitative research methodology, the study utilizes a comparative textual analysis technique. Idioms and fixed expressions were identified in the source text and matched with their equivalents in the Turkish translation. The resulting data were evaluated in accordance with Baker’s theory, and the translator’s strategies were classified under specific categories. The findings indicate that the translator primarily adopted a strategy of functional equivalence in rendering idioms and fixed expressions in the Turkish version of The Yacoubian Building. However, other methods such as literal translation, explanatory translation, and cultural adaptation were also observed in certain instances. The results suggest that the translator focused on preserving meaning by taking into account the linguistic and cultural expectations of the target audience. This study aims to contribute to the field of translation studies by providing concrete examples of how the concept of equivalence can be applied, especially in the context of literary translation.
